Teeth whitening – why is it essential to have professional teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that has become increasingly popular over the past 20 years.

Mouth and teeth before and after whitening

Research shows that 25% of people who seek to have their teeth whitened in the UK do not opt for a professional service but instead go to a beauty therapist or cheaper unqualified individual offering the service. This is where the procedure can become dangerous for patients.

So how does this relate to the procedure? Teeth whitening should ways be a bespoke procedure that uses your exact tooth measurements. Here at Fresh Dental, the whitening trays used to apply the whitening agent are custom made and the whitening agent is applied safely, so that there are no gaps where the agent can seep through and cause harm to your gums. In contrast, unqualified beauty therapists and other businesses without the relevant credentials use a ‘one-size-fits-all’ design that is not measured to the patient’s tooth structure, allowing for whitening agent to potentially leak and harm your gums.

The process here at Fresh Dental

You will need to attend an initial consultation where you can talk through the process with your dentist here at Fresh. You and your dentist will choose the shade that you would like your teeth to be. Once you are happy, we will proceed and take impressions of your teeth so that your custom whitening trays can be created. When we have created these the whitening agent can be applied to your teeth and you can continue the process at home.

How can a smile makeover benefit me?

What is a smile makeover?

A smile makeover is a procedure that encompasses several other cosmetic treatments including veneers, teeth whitening, crowns and fillings and dental implants.

Tooth whitening

Teeth whitening is a bespoke process that is very popular all over the world. Here at Fresh our dentists are fully qualified to carry out this procedure and use bespoke whitening trays where the whitening agent cannot leak through and over onto your gums. This is a potential risk with non-bespoke methods carried out by those who do not have the right qualifications and use a ‘one-size-fits-all’ method.

Veneers

Do you have a cracked, chipped, broken, damaged or discoloured tooth? Veneers procedure an amazing cosmetic result. They are porcelain shells than fit over the front of your tooth surfaces. Veneers can also be used to close gaps in your teeth. There is a small amount of preparation involved in creating dental veneers including etching the tooth inquisition down to the correct size. This is so that your new tooth does not protrude. A special adhesive is used to bond the veneer to your tooth. One of the great advantages of veneers is that they are stain-resistant, so you can continue enjoying the foods you love without feeling too guilty!

Crowns and bridges

If you have a tooth that has previously been filled or cannot be repaired due to a larger break, you may need a crown to save the tooth. Crowns are single tooth restorations that can be matched and shaped to suit your existing teeth. In some situations a bridge is more suitable and can replace the gap left by one or several teeth. Bridges are attached to your existing natural teeth each side of the gap. This can be created using CEREC technology.

White fillings

There are certain smile makeover combinations that are particularly popular, such as veneers and teeth whitening and/or orthodontics. Ask your dentist here at Fresh if you would like to know other common combinations.

Common questions about dental implants – the best tooth replacement solution…

Dental implants are widely considered the best solution for replacing a missing tooth, being a fixed option designed to fuse with your jawbone – a permanent part of you. Here are a few questions that you may have in anticipation of getting dental implants…

  • Why choose dental implants? Dental implants are the most natural-looking solution after a real tooth. Here at Fresh, we can create hand crafted crowns to place on top of the implant,
  • What are dental implants? Dental implants are made from titanium and work by replacing your tooth’s root – it is then left to fuse with your jawbone.
  • What does the dental implants procedure involve? You will be invited to attend an initial consultation where you can discuss your needs with your dentist. Once a bespoke treatment plan has been established, you will need to return for a future appointment so that the first stage of the procedure can be carried out. Your dentist will place the implant into your jawbone. This will then be left to heal for several months and once the implant has bonded with your jawbone, an abutment can be fitted and the restoration (such as a crown) is placed over the top to give a stunning aesthetic finish.
  • Am I eligible for dental implants? In some cases, certain patients do not have sufficient bone to withstand dental implants. If you are looking to have dental implants, your jawbone needs to have enough bone in order for the implants to be supported. If this is the case, a procedure called bone grafting can be performed in order to build up enough bone for you to have the implant placed safely and effectively.
  • Does the implants procedure hurt? Placing dental implants is a surgical procedure and requires a small operation. This means you can opt for local anaesthetic for sedation – you will be able to discuss this with your dentist beforehand.
  • How do I care for my implants? Your dental implants can be maintained in the same way as your natural teeth. This means brushing twice a day for 2 minutes a day and flossing at least once a day, as well as attending regular check ups with your dentist and dental hygienist, who can advise you further.

Smile consultation and makeover at Fresh Dental

What is a smile makeover? It is very simply, when patients would like more than a single treatment to cosmetically improve their smile, for example, tooth whitening and veneers.  It is a bespoke solution where a plan is created with the patient’s specific needs in mind. So which treatments can be classed as being part of a smile makeover? Find out below….

Tooth whitening

Tooth whitening has become an extremely popular treatment worldwide and has a very patient satisfaction rate. Tooth whitening is a bespoke process that can be performed at the practice and then continued by the patient at home. Here at Fresh Dental, your dentist will create bespoke whitening trays and a whitening agent is safely applied to the trays – this is what is responsible for whitening your teeth. It is essential that you have the procedure carried out by a dentist or doctor and not a beauty therapist, as they do not have the relevant qualifications to perform this though still offer the treatment all over the world. This is unsafe and can cause irrevocable damage to your teeth as the whitening agent can leek into your gums as the trays used are not bespoke.

White Fillings

White tooth-coloured composite fillings or ceramic restorations can give you rejuvenated-looking smile here at Fresh. White composite fillings can be colour matched to your existing teeth, giving a discreet and natural appearance. As well as being an improved aesthetic solution, these material are stronger than amalgam fillings and do not cause as much sensitivity to hot and cold drinks.

Crowns and Bridges

Crowns can be perfectly colour watched to fit in with your existing teeth and here at Fresh Dental we use Cerec technology to offer same day crown appointments. In some cases a bridge is a more appropriate restoration Dental bridges can replace gaps left by one or more teeth, bridging the gap with a small cluster of false teeth.

Veneers

Veneers are thin layers of porcelain that are fixed onto your tooth with a very effective and strong adhesive. Veneers are a durable option if you are looking to change the shape, colour and position of your teeth and this can totally transform your smile.

Unlike a crown, a veneer covers mainly the visible front part of the tooth and can sometimes wrap over the biting edge. Veneers are a durable solution that offer natural-looking results and there is no recovery period.

Braces – frequently asked questions

Below are some of the most common questions patients ask about orthodontic treatment and braces….

Am I too old for orthodontics?

From 2015 onwards, 1 in 5 patients seeking orthodontic treatment is an adult. The stigma around braces for adults have dramatically evaporated in recent years. There are a range of orthodontics treatments to suit adults and children alike.

Are invisible orthodontics suitable for everyone?

Here at Fresh Dental, we offer Invisalign i7@ and Invisalign Express, which are suitable for minor problems such as crowding of your front teeth. However, these systems are not recommended for more complex orthodontic problem. Fresh Dental offer are consultations for patients, and you will be able to talk through what kind of action to take and ask any questions.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

This varies and depends on several factors. These factors include your age, the severity of the problem to be treated and the type of system used. Invisalign i7@ can present noticeable results for minor problems very early on during treatment (around 3 months), whilst cFast can take a year or longer.

Do fixed braces hurt?

Fixed braces can sometimes give patients some discomfort during the first few days that they are fixed to the teeth. As you begin to adjust to the sensation of the ceramic brackets and wires in your mouth, this will quickly disappear.

Why Cfast braces?

Fast braces allow you to choose from ceramic brackets and clear wires, so if you are worried about wearing your braces in front of others, they are the perfect cosmetic option. The brace is indeed still slightly visible, but the innovative design means that you do not have to wear it for as long as traditional fixed methods.

What are the most commonly treated orthodontic problems?

  • Protruding upper front teeth.
  • Cross bite
  • Open bite
  • Deep bite.
  • Crowding.
  • Misaligned teeth.

How do I care for my braces?

This is very dependant on what type of brace you have opted for. For example, fixed braces methods require different kind of maintenance to removable options. Fixed options are usually a little more restrictive as they are permanently treating your teeth – this means there are certain foods you need to avoid, whilst removal aligners (such as Invisalign) are a little flexible where this is concerned. You should also observe the important of wearing a retainer post-treatment as this will ensure that your teeth do not fall back into their original position.
