What to expect when you have a crown fitted

We know our patients have high expectations and we pride ourselves on being able to keep up with these, offering state-of-the-art technology, such as CEREC same-day crowns.

Porcelain crown and bridge (dentistry) on a hand

When might you need a crown?

  • Discoloured tooth.
  • Weak tooth (cracked/chipped).
  • Improve the aesthetic of your smile.

CEREC technology at Fresh Dental

Fresh Dental is one of the few practice to offer same-day CEREC crowns in the Maidstone area and this treatment is very sought after, offering patients a new porcelain, hand-crafted crown in a single appointment. CEREC crowns are a superior alternative to gold and amalgam which are not as aesthetically pleasing. CEREC crowns can last up to 10 years if properly looked after – they can be maintained in the same way as your existing teeth, making them an easy restoration to look after.

What is the procedure behind CEREC crowns ?

We will carry out an oral exam and take some digital x-rays to ensure that CEREC is the right option for you. Following this, your dentist will take impressions of your tooth so that it can be a custom fit for your mouth, fitting perfectly amongst your other teeth. Any debris and decay will be removed from your tooth and etch it (remove some of the tooth); this ensures that the crown will not protrude and look out of place in your mouth because of its thickness. Our CEREC software will create a virtual model of your tooth and this will be the foundation for your new restoration. This is passed on to the milling machine which can then be left to create the crown using high quality, durable porcelain.

Once the tooth has been made, it’s ready to fit! Minor amends will be made to the tooth and it can be placed. You will have a new tooth that is in-keeping with the shade and shape of your existing teeth.

Biggest advancements in dentistry

Over the past 30 years, the world of dentistry and orthodontics has seen some serious developments. Here we take a look at a few examples.

Woman wearing orthodontic silicone trainer. Invisible braces

Invisalign technology is an orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth using a series of clear removable aligners. Invisalign uses gentle force to guide your teeth into a desired position, all whilst offering a discreet design – your friends need;t know you’re having orthodontic treatment as the aligners are clear.

The benefits of Invisalign:

  • Discreet as they are clear.
  • Removable so you can carry on eating the foods you love during your treatment period.
  • Comfortable – Invisalign is bracket and arch wire free, so you don’t need to worry about any scratches. It’s also a lot safer to play sports.
  • Easier to maintain good oral and dental hygiene – as the aligners are removable, it’s much easier to clean and floss your teeth – brackets and archwires can make this difficult with traditional fixed brace designs.

Here at Fresh we offer 2 types of Invisalign treatment, Invisalign and Invisalign express – you can read more about these here.

Digital impressions

Many people used to dread having impressions of their teeth taken because of the setting agent being so uncomfortable and inducing a gag reflex. However, gone are these days as impressions can be taken digitally – these are then placed onto a computer where your dentist is able to show you a complex digital image of your teeth.

CEREC technology

CEREC allows you to have porcelain hand-crafted crowns in a single appointment – walk into the practice with a damaged, cracked, or discoloured tooth and leave with a brand new replacement. Here at Fresh we are one of the only practices to offer CEREC technology in the Maidstone area. The treatment is completely bespoke, so your new crowns will be 100% suited to you in shade and shape, in keeping with your existing teeth.

Treatment for nervous patients

Do you have a long-standing negative association with the dentist? Rest assured, you are not alone, as half of people in the UK have admitted to having some form of dental phobia, with 12% of these people suffering from extreme dental anxiety.
Dental care is making big steps in pain-free treatment and we strive to incorporate this technology at Fresh, to help make our patients feel more at ease about their treatment. Many patients will actually put off having treatment that could make a huge difference to their daily lives because of their dental anxiety and at Fresh, we’re committed to helping patients battle their fear so that they are able to come and receive the treatment they need.

Intravenous Sedation
‘Intravenous’ means the sedative medication is administered through a small needle or catheter into a vein. During intravenous sedation, you will be able to co-operate with the dentist, for example if they need you to open your mouth wider. The sedative used has an amnesic effect, so you will have little or no memory of the procedure. You will be in a state of reduced anxiety.
Before and after sedation
You will need to be accompanied by a friend or member of your family before any procedure that involves sedation  as you will not be able to drive afterwards for your own safety. We recommend that you wear loose and comfortable clothing. Your dentist will ask you to eat a light meal a few hours before the procedure.
So let’s round-up the benefits of sedation:
  • Reduce anxiety before undergoing a dental procedure.
  • You’ll remember little about the procedure.
  • Avoids the need for general anaesthetic.
At Fresh we believe in strong rapports with our patients in order to make them feel safe and in good hands. If you have any worries about treatment, our team are friendly, approachable and always ready to listen to your worries. Read more about the Fresh Dental ethos here.

Back to school – make sure your child’s teeth are healthy before the school year begins

It’s not too long before primary and secondary schools go back for Autumn term. With this in mind, have you thought about having your child’s dental hygiene checked over after the summer period?

During the summer period it’s likely that your child’s brushing and dental hygiene routine became disrupted and perhaps you had less of a view over the kinds of foods they were eating.

Here at Fresh we offer general check-ups for your child as well as hygienist appointments which fulfil a different purpose but are just as important. Whilst general check ups with the dentist assess the health of your child’s teeth, the hygienist can offer a deep clean of their teeth if they are suffering from surface stains as well as advice on cleaning techniques to parents and children alike. The dental hygienist can also advise on the types of food to eat and avoid in order to avoid cavities and fillings.

Examples of foods that are good for your child’s teeth:

  • Dairy products – dairy products have actually been proven to help your teeth and offer them strength. Dairy products lower the ph level in your mouth and in turn protect tooth enamel – a vital part of the tooth.
  • High-fibre veg – high fibre foods act like a deep clean of your teeth especially spinach, which is high in water and helps wash away unwanted food particles that linger in your mouth.

Examples to avoid:

  • Sticky confectionary – toffee and caramel-based confectionary in particular.
  • Chewy high starch food – bread and bagels.
  • Food and drink high in acid (fizzy drinks and citrus fruits) – the opposing side to dairy, food and drink high in acid makes the ph level in your mouth higher and thus renders your tooth enamel more susceptible to damage. Once our tooth enamel has worn away it cannot be restored and this is why regular check-ups are essential for young children who are establishing their brushing patterns and routine.
