Dr Marcus Spry, Clinical Director at Fresh Dental Care, shares the 5 steps in a modern smile makeover.

When I first qualified as a dentist in 1985, cosmetic appearance led dentistry was almost non existent in the UK. These days are in the distant past now and appearance led dentistry is very much what I do.

I think the aspect that interests me most about this is the fact that it is what my patients want.

It’s not always the easiest of things to provide as it is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Here are the steps in a modern smile makeover:

Patient consult: we find out what is bothering the patient and explain some of the alternatives

Photo’s models and x-rays: these allow us to begin to see how the smile transformation will work

Patients view the diagnostic models. These are mock ups of what is planned and if the patient is happy with the proposal, we proceed with treatment

The preparation is begun and temporaries are made as per the mock up for the patient to try while the proper crowns or veneers are made

The porcelain is placed using glycerine to allow the patient to view the crowns or veneers, to check that they are happy with work and then if all is well they are cemented

So all in all a happy patient, no surprises or misunderstandings, and a successful outcome!
