It’s a new school term and your child may be taking part in some contact sports. Did you know that your child is 55% more likely to suffer a serious tooth related injury if they do not wear a protective mouthguard? With this in mind, it’s paramount that you protect your child from any possible dental injury such as a chipped or cracked tooth or even tooth loss.

Here at Fresh we offer orthodontic moutguards that are custom made and more resistant to damage. Shop-bought mouthguards are not fitted to your tooth structure and the excess space can cause your teeth to shift if they are exposed to contact.

Why orthodontic moutguards?

Custom fit moutguards are very durable in comparison to shop bought versions and retain their shape overtime. As well as protecting your child’s teeth, mouthguards can also protect against jaw and head pain that occurs from contact to the face.  A prominent problem associated with shop-bought moutguards is that they can cause an uncomfortable gag reflex though this does not occur with custom appliances as they are a perfect fit your your teeth.

If your child has braces they can still compete in contact sports and be protected from dangerous contact as special brace mouthguards are also available. Please contact us for more information on this.

How are orthodontic moutguards made?

Your orthodontist here at Fresh Dental will invite you and your child to an initial consultation so that the process can be discussed. Impressions of your child’s teeth will be taken so that the appliance can be made up to be an exact fit for your child’s tooth structure.

Looking after your mouthguard

  • Do no expose your mouthguard to high temperatures as this can change the shape of the appliance and therefore reduce the protective effect of the mouthguard.
  • Leave your guard away from hot surfaces and direct sunlight.
  • Keep your mouthguard in a protective case when you are not using it so that it does not collect dirt and bacteria.
  • Rinse your mouthguard in cold water and clean it after each use.
