Dr Marcus Spry’s FAQ’s:
Patients frequently have asked me five questions over the years.
- How can I keep my teeth?
The simple answer to this is that you need to brush the plaque off your teeth. Plaque is a bacterial deposit that builds up on the teeth daily and needs to be removed by the cleaning action of a toothbrush. Additionally, ensure that you don’t have too much sugar in your diet. Leaving plaque leads to gum disease, which can mean the gums shrink away from the teeth and, if you consume a lot of sugary food and drink, the plaque germs will turn this to acid which will tend to erode the tooth and create a cavity. It’s a good idea to have a regular dental examination because early intervention is the key to minimal treatment.
- How can I help my kids have great teeth?
Children need your help when very young in brushing their teeth for them and sometimes this can be a bit of a battle. If on a particular day a child is very resistant to brushing, it’s probably best to leave for a day, and then the next day be a little more encouraging. Children don’t tend to suffer from gum disease in the way that adults do but it is absolutely the best thing to restrict the amount of sugar in their diet as children can easily get cavities, especially in their milk teeth.
- How can I improve the appearance of my smile?
Many people want a nice, healthy, confident, attractive smile. The way to effect this is to initially think about having your teeth whitened. White teeth look younger and more attractive. Treating the arrangement of the teeth falls into two categories: the actual shape of the tooth and its position. Crooked teeth can be straightened with adult orthodontics, either clear braces or tooth coloured wires and brackets. This is very discrete and extremely effective. Porcelain crowns or veneers will improve the shape and evenness of the teeth.
- What can I do about toothache?
Initially, painkillers. However, if something is hurting you really do need to visit us to have it checked.
- Will it hurt?
We’re asked this all the time! We try everything possible to ensure treatment is as comfortable as possible. We ensure that you would be ‘comfortably numb’ during treatment. You are always in control; treatment can be paused at any stage. If necessary, we can sedate a patient who is too nervous to have treatment awake. It’s always possible to refer a patient to hospital for treatment.
