Intravenous Sedation – what is it and how can it benefit me as a nervous patient?
For nervous patients, visits to the dentist can be particularly traumatising, occupying their minds for weeks before their appointment is scheduled for. Here at Fresh, we aim to make all patients feel at ease and phobia-free about their treatment and in some instances, this involves the use of IV sedation.
What is IV sedation?
IV sedation is a form of conscious sedation designed to place patients at total ease when they are undergoing a dental procedure. IV sedation uses a drug known as Midazolam, an amnesic which causes patients to forget some (or in some cases all) of the procedure, despite being conscious throughout.
What is involved during treatment?
Your dentist will talk you through what is involved with IV sedation. You will be asked to lie back and relax in the dental chair – your dentist will place a small plastic tube, known as a cannula, into the back of your hand. The sedative will be applied through this tube virtually painlessly (you will be given some local anaesthetic around the area before the sedative is applied – this will make the area numb). You will feel totally at ease and relaxed post-IV sedation
Why should I opt for IV sedation?
If you are a nervous patient, IV sedation can put you at ease for your forthcoming treatment and any future treatments – you may find that after one treatment performed under sedation, you may not need it again in future to combat your nerves. The effects of sedation are fast-acting – you will be feel the full effects within a matter of seconds whilst oral sedation can take up to an hour to take effect. With this in mind, you do not need to worry about anticipating the procedure after you have had the sedation administered.
IV sedation can help you tackle future procedures, putting you on a new path where dental treatment is concerned, changing your association with the dentist for the future. Here at Fresh, we understand that dental phobia comes in all different forms and we know that everyone is different. We will approach your dental anxiety sensitively and with understanding.
