Considering your dental hygiene….

Dental hygiene is often overlooked, hidden in the shadow of dental check-ups and appointments. Dental and oral hygiene is just as important as dentist check-ups and an appointment with your dentist should not be substituted for a hygienist appointment, as these serve different purposes. Here is a little bit about the importance of the dental hygienist….

Difference to the dentist

Your dentist is essentially a GP for your teeth, identifying problems such as disease, carrying out restorative, cosmetic and repair work, as well as writing prescriptions and carrying out X-rays. A dental hygienist is responsible for deep cleaning your teeth and will sometimes perform certain cosmetic procedures. They will also teach patients how to look after their oral hygiene. Dentists possess more training than dental hygienist, but the two work together to make decisions about your dental health, each contributing information from their respective fields.

Scale and polish – This is one of the most common procedures carried out by a hygienist. A scale and polish is a deep clean of your teeth. There are certain stains in form of plaque and tartar which cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone.

Your hygienist can also advise you on how to take preventative measures to ensure you do not develop plaque and tartar-laden teeth. Your hygienist can also show you how to brush and floss correctly, so that you get the best out of your at-home dental hygiene routine.

Dental hygiene at Fresh

Here at Fresh in Maidstone, we focus very much on prevention, tackling problems such as gum disease and fresh breath treatment, so that you can be confident about your oral hygiene. We use your regular examinations (known as 10-point clinical assessments) to screen for any potential symptoms of oral cancer – early detection is the most significant element in overcoming this.

Your 10-point clinical assessment and hygiene appointments will involve discussing your diet and lifestyle choices and how they impact upon your dental hygiene.
