Dental implants – the procedure

There are factors that determine the length of time required to carry out the procedure.

This include:

– Your dental health.

– The number of teeth you wish to have replaced.

– The type of teeth you are looking to have replaced.

– Whether you need a tooth extraction beforehand.

What does having dental implants involve?

You will be invited to an initial consultation where the process will be outlined to you in detail. You will be able to ask any questions you have and discuss any anxieties. Our dentists here at Fresh are friendly and approachable and will make you feel at ease. There are generally 2 phases when when your tooth or teeth are being restored with a dental implant.

Phase 1 Your dentist will apply an anaesthetic in order to numb your mouth from any pain. Your dentist will then make an incision into your gum where the implant is to be placed, exposing the bone that is underneath. A quiet dental drill will be used to make space for an implant in the bone. The implant will be screwed in place. Once the implant is in place, the abutment will be placed on top of the implant and will remain until throughout the healing process. Your gum will be closed over the implant with a stitch. During the healing period, the implant will fuse with your jawbone.

Phase 2 The implant will once again be exposed so that an incision can be made in your gums. If an impression is needed, an extension is placed on top of the implant so that this can be made possible – this will be used to fit your new restoration. Your crown will be made up based on the impressions that provided the models of your teeth – this is so that it is an exact fit for your existing teeth. The final step is the placement of the crown. Caring for my implant You can care for your implant like a natural tooth which includes brushing twice a day for 2 minutes and flossing regularly, as well as attending annual appointments with your dentist and hygienist.
