Frequently asked questions: dental implants
Thinking about having dental implants? Get the information you need by taking a look at some of some of the most frequently asked questions we are asked by patients.
Q. What are dental implants?
A. Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth and provide support for your jawbone, offering functionality and a highly aesthetic result.
Q. What is a dental implant made up of?
A. Dental implants have 3 components:
Implant – the small screw that is placed into the jawbone, responsible for stimulating your jawbone.
Abutment – connecting element between the implant and the restoration.
Restoration – aesthetic covering for the implant providing cosmetic appeal and functionality.
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?
A. They look and feel like natural teeth and are widely considered to be the next best thing to a natural tooth. Unlike dentures, dental implants prevent bone loss, are a fixed solution, and can last a lifetime if properly cared for.
Q. Is there an age limit on dental implants?
A. Age is not a factor where dental implants are concerned however, the quality of your jawbone and remaining bone density may affect your suitability. Patients who do not have enough bone to support dental implants can undergo a procedure known as a bone graft, where bone is taken from another area of the body and grafted to the jaw region.
Q. Is there any pain associated with dental implants treatment?
A. You will be under local anaesthetic throughout the procedure, ensuring that it is as pain-free and as comfortable as possible. You may experience some discomfort once the anaesthetic wears off, but this can be managed with pain relief medication and will not last more than a few days.
Q. What is involved with the dental implants procedure?
A. You will be placed under local anaesthetic for the short procedure and the implant will be inserted into your jawbone. Before we can fit you with a restoration (crown or bridge) the implant must fuse with your jawbone over a period of months – you will be fitted with a temporary restoration during this time.
